For LaTerrell Bradford β13, the idea of attending university was once just a suggestion from a mentor. While working at Lutheran Social Services in Long Beach, California, her supervisor, an MSW graduate, encouraged LaTerrell to pursue higher education. That moment sparked a journey that would eventually lead her to Metropolitan State University of Denver, where she found the education, support, and confidence to thrive.
βI am first-generation. That was my first introduction to the thought of going to University,β LaTerrell recalls.
Discovering Opportunity at ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ Denver
After relocating to Denver and completing an associate degree at the Community College of Denver, LaTerrell transferred to ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ Denver to pursue a degree in Human Services/Mental Health and Counseling. She credits her professorsβespecially Dr. Antonio Ledesmaβfor providing an exceptional education that equipped her with the knowledge and skills to work with people from all walks of life.
βThe education I received gave me the confidence to walk into any room and sit at any table and know that I belong there,β she says.
ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ Denverβs inclusive and supportive environment allowed LaTerrell to grow not only academically but personally, preparing her for a career in which empathy, understanding, and leadership are essential.
A Career Rooted in People and Purpose
While attending ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ Denver, LaTerrell worked at an investment firmβan experience that combined her professional development with her academic studies. Today, as Office Manager at Segall Bryant & Hamill, she continues to help people navigate complex systems, bringing the same values of compassion, integrity, and understanding that she developed at ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ Denver into her work.
βFinancial literacy is very important,β she explains. βMany people do not receive the proper training from their parents or caregivers. Understanding how financial systems work can prevent people from ending up in difficult positions.β
Her career demonstrates how an ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ Denver education equips students with practical skills, critical thinking, and the confidence to lead in diverse professional settings.
Giving Back and Representation
LaTerrell remains actively connected to ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ Denver, volunteering and attending events to support current students. She understands the importance of representation, knowing that seeing someone who looks like you or shares similar experiences can inspire the next generation.
βAs a Black female alumnus, I try to show up at ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ events and volunteer whenever I can. If you can do it, I can do it,β she says.
Advice to Future Roadrunners
βUtilize everything that is available to you on campus. Education is more than books and studying. Attend events outside of your culture, step outside your comfort zone, spread your wings and flyβand ask for help when you need it!β
For LaTerrell, ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ Denver and the Auraria campus were transformative. The combination of high-quality education, inclusive community, and supportive faculty and staff changed her life in profound waysβhelping her become the confident leader and professional she is today.
